paleontological resource impact mitigation
The lab provides mitigation plan development, professional paleontological monitoring and associated services for projects identified as potentially impacting significant fossil resources in the central region of California.services
Paleontological Resource Impact Mitigation
Paleontological resource impact mitigation begins with development of a mitigation plan. The plan details the mitigation measures, which typically include monitoring construction activities in geologically sensitive strata, fossil collection, fossil preparation, bulk sediment sample collection and processing for microfossils, and documentation of the geologic setting of the fossil resources.
Currently, we have a long-term paleontological mitigation program underway with Madera County at Fairmead Landfill. For further information relating to the Fairmead Landfill project see the link below.

Past Paleontological Resource Impact Mitigation Projects
In the past couple of years we have completed two paleontological mitigation programs for Caltrans; State Route 99 Fairmead Interchange project in Madera County and State Route 180 West project in Fresno County. Below is a link to the final Paleontological Mitigation Report for the State Route 180 West project, which summarizes the mitigation program results.

CEQA and Fossil Preservation in California
For individuals interested in further information regarding the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and its relationship to fossil preservation, the following link to a paper by Eric Scott and Kathleen Springer provides an excellent synopsis of the subject.

Interested in our paleontological services?
Contact Dr. Robert Dundas at the link below to discuss your project.
Be aware that projects typically must be scheduled months in advance of a start date because the lab is engaged in other projects and activities. All professional service contracts are entered into between the contractor and the California State University, Fresno Foundation, which handles the University's grants and contracts.
